So, I have another doctrine that I am working through this week and it is one that has been lingering for a while.
I was raised as an evangelical Christian all my life, my dad being the pastor of the churches. So often I heard someone say "You should go hear from God". Then off the person goes like they knew what to do. No one even asked the question of what it meant to hear from Father. Or how to do it. Or, “so what does Father’s voice sound like?”
I always thought that it was just I being young in the faith and not knowing what to do. I am however now a middle aged man and still do not know what it actually means and how Father's voice sounds. This must set me apart as so many believers are living their lives hearing what to do, where to go and whom to marry...
One of the practices that I do not agree with is playing Russian roulette with the Scripture; flick through, put your finger down on any page, read the passages around where your finder landed and take it as “your” message. It seems a bit too fast and loose to me. Do understand that I do believe that whatever lot falls in your lap is destined by Father. That principle is repeated often enough in Scripture. But Russian roulette doesn't feel like it is in the same category. Well, there I went and opened another can of worms; feelings.
"If you have peace brother then it is Father's will". Something I also heard a lot. Well there are a lot of sins that feels right and may even come with its own measure of peace, but we know what that leads to... Other times the peaceful option may actually be the wrong choice as it isn’t practising your faith. I am reminded of the passage in Jeremiah where the remnant decide to rather go to Egypt where it was relatively safe. Father warned them through Jeremiah that they would die if they went, but that He would protect and care for them if they stayed in Israel. The “safe” choice was the wrong choice.
So, no Russian roulette and no living by your feelings alone...
OK, then how about testing every door. Now this one I have based most of my life decisions on. It is the “easy alternative” as you don’t have to know what Father’s voice sounds like and if things goes wrong, well it wasn’t your fault…
" Prov. 16:9 - A man’s mind plans his way [as he journeys through life], But the LORD directs his steps and establishes them."
I test the door and ask Father to open what He wills, closes what He wills and to give me the peace either way.
Now what would have been great is if we each had an Urim and Thummim. We would then be assured to hear straight from Father, but only when He wanted to speak with us. But alas, that is not for our time.
But, father spoke through the prophets in the Bible. Father hasn’t changed, so I can only take it that we as humans have either become more sinful (if that is possible) or have lost the sensitivity for His spirit. Saying that, even Jeremiah was hesitant when he was given the option of either returning to Jerusalem or to go with the captives to Babylon (Jer. 40:5). So not even he was always told by Father where to go and what to do.
OK, so that is how far I got and as I hope to mature in my faith I want to learn how to really hear Father’s voice; and this is where you come in. I need your input to understand how you hear from Father? I am not asking specifically for the right answer, I am looking for any answers to put me back down the rabbit hole…
