At some level, we all know that we can't live up to the Creator's standards, but rather than begging his mercy, we frequently "solve" this problem by worshipping lesser gods. Man continually lowers his spiritual sights, worshipping debased creations rather than the Creator, because that allows him to live by debased rules and lower expectations.
