When King Jeroboam's son became gravely ill in 1 Kings 14, his wife disguised herself, hoping that if the prophet Ahijah didn't know she was, he might give her a favorable prophecy concerning her son. This with other aspects of her behavior point to a kind of superstitious, magical thinking about YHWH, as if he were just another god of this or that hill. This is what happens when those who witnessed the awesome miracles of the Exodus and Wilderness intermarry with the pagan followers of lesser gods. Eventually, everything devolves to the lowest possible level.
