The ebb and flow of moral standards correlated with prosperity is a repeating pattern in history.

Prosperity brings apostasy.
Apostasy brings judgment.
Judgment brings morality.
Morality brings prosperity.

The longer we live in prosperity, the easier it becomes to believe we are the source of our own fortune. Prosperity follows hardship, but if you forget the lessons of hardship, you will be forced to relearn them.
