Israel served YHWH all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the work that YHWH did for Israel.

Just like the Christian church, ancient Israel continued to faithfully serve God so long as the first generation of believers lived. As soon as that generation died, they slipped into general apostacy.
