One final thought on food in the Bible before we move on to other subjects. We've covered some of the more common New Testament verses that people use to discuss food. How about the last book: Revelation?

In Revelation 18:2 lists several things that are in Babylon and states that some of them are unclean. All the translations state unclean birds and some of the translations list unclean animals/beasts. Now, what are these unclean creatures? If everything we have been taught in church about no animal is unclean to eat, what is this verse referring to? How can some birds and animals be clean and others not? And what does it mean they are unclean? Unclean for what?

This is a big issue when taking the Bible out of context of the rest of the Bible. I've mentioned before the only time we have a list of clean and unclean animals is in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14. These chapters state what those clean and unclean tags are for: eating. We have to keep this context when reading the New Testament as well. If we do not, we are reading into Scripture what we want, rather than taking Scripture for what it says.

I'll leave you with this verse to consider. While it applies to much of what we have covered in other topics and will continue to apply to new topics; it really hits home here.

Ezekiel 22:26 ESV - Her priests have done violence to my law and have profaned my holy things. They have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean, and they have disregarded my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.
