The first few chapters of Genesis are essential to understanding God's intention for marriage. Richard Davidson notes that Genesis's portrayal of the first marriage "constitutes the foundation for the rest of the biblical narrative and discourse on human sexuality and encapsulates the fundamental principles of a theology of sexuality" (Flame of Yahweh, 15-16). According to the Genesis creation accounts (Gen. 1:1-2:3; 2:4-25), marriage as God intended it is a heterosexual, monogamous union. Any other form (homosexual, polygamous, etc.) is a deviation from God's expressed will for marriage and sexuality.
