YESHUA ARRESTED

From Matthew 26:47-56; Mark 14:43-52; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:2-12

Judas Iscariot knew about Gethsemane, for he had been there a number of times with Yeshua and the disciples. Now he came with a band of soldiers and officers whom the chief priests and Pharisees had given him, armed with torches and weapons, swords and staves. Yeshua knew exactly what would happen to Him, so He stepped forward to meet them. [Whom are you seeking?] He asked. [Yeshua of Nazareth,] they answered. [I am He,] Yeshua replied. When He said that the soldiers and officers fell backward to the ground. Again, He asked, [Whom are you seeking?] [Yeshua of Nazareth,] they replied again. [But I have told you that I am He,] Yeshua said. [Since you came for Me, let these others go.] This carried out the prophecy that Yeshua had made when He had said He would not lose one of His true disciples. Judas had given his companions a signal, that he would kiss Yeshua to identify Him, and they were to take Him away unharmed, At this point, he stepped forward and said, [Hail, Teacher,] and kissed Him. [Do you betray your Moshiach with a kiss?] Yeshua asked him. [But do what you have come to do.] Then the soldiers and officers arrested Yeshua. [Adonai, shall we attack with swords?] the apostles asked. Peter did not wait for an answer. He rushed forward with his sword and cut off the right ear of a high priest’s servant, named Malchus. [Peter, put up your sword,] Yeshua told him. [Those who use swords, get killed with swords. Don’t you realize that I could pray to My Father and He would send twelve legions of angels at My Command? But then how would the Scriptures be fulfilled?] Then Yeshua touched Malchus’ ear and healed it. Then Yeshua turned to the chief priests, their officers and soldiers, and said, [Have you come out here against Me as though I were a robber, armed with swords and staves? You did not touch Me while I was with you daily, teaching in the temple. But all of this must happen to fulfil the Scriptures. This is your hour, when Satan’s power of darkness comes.] The disciples fled for their lives at this moment. Mark, a young follower who had only a linen cloth around him, fled naked when they grabbed for him, leaving the linen cloth in their hands.

COMMENTARY

FOOTSTEPS OF YESHUA: TRIALS AND CRUCIFIXION

Yeshua was tried by four judges before He was finally condemned to death on the cross. The soldiers who arrested Him took Yeshua first to the house of Annas, the former high priest. Annas questioned the prisoner before sending Him to the house of Caiaphas. the current high priest. Caiaphas presided over the Sanhedrin’s trial of Yeshua, they accused Him of blasphemy, but they did not have the power to pronounce judgment. Only Pilate, the Roman governor, could decree the death sentence, so the Jews took Yeshua to the Antonia fortress. Pilate could not find any evidence against Yeshua, but he was afraid to let Him go. When he heard that the prisoner was from Nazareth, Pilate sent Him to Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, who was in Jerusalem because of the Passover feast. Herod Antipas questioned Yeshua, but He refused to answer Herod. After mocking and beating Him, Herod sent Yeshua back to Pilate. Pilate offered to release Yeshua, but the crowd demanded His death. Finally, Pilate gave in to their wish and ordered His crucifixion.
