I have heard people associate doing the commands in the Old Testament as "trying to earn God's love". This could not be further from the truth.
As with the example in the comic, do you not do the same when you have guests/loved ones come over? Do you not do a bunch of preparation in order for everything in the house to look its best? Do you not make special foods for those guests? Do you not have other activities possibly planned, like a favorite board game?
Are you trying to earn their love? NO! You are showing you are paying attention to them and that you care for them. You are showing that you love them.
The same goes with the Father. You may see someone that is following what the Bible says to do on how to live and they do all this work before a rest day. All this preparation in order to make sure that on the rest day, they do not have to do anything. Why? To spend time with the Father on His appointed time! He rested in Creation and made the day special. Then He made several other rest days, the Holy Days we covered earlier, all to spend time with Him!
If you had guests over, would you go out and mow the lawn? Run to the grocery store for that weekly load of food? Of course not. Again, other things that you would plan for so that those things would not have to be done while the guests are there.
But I hear you saying "but, Joshua, God is always with us." Yes, He is. So were your parents when you were younger. Did you not have special times that the family would set aside to come together? Maybe nightly meals? Or holidays? Why would that be needed if they were there with you all the time?
Currently, I am with my children most of the day every day, but as a father, I still need that special time with them. The time of coming together as a family that everyone is present and focused. Dinner, a game night, a movie, whatever. That time is still special to me, a way for us to show love to each other. I see the Father viewing us and His appointed times the same way.
And for those celebrating: Happy Day of Atonement!
