Like silver dross coating an earthenware pot are sincere-sounding words of an evil heart.

According to K&D, earthenware vessels were glazed using the dross leftover from silver. It gives the vessel a silvery finish, but it's an illusion. So are sincere sounding words spoken with an ulterior motive.
