Rachel was the only one of Jacob's four wives whom he married of his own accord. The other three were all someone else's idea.

Traditional marriages are arranged, but Jacob and Rachel show that #marriage "for love" is not a recent invention. There's nothing wrong with marrying for love, just don't "love" a bad choice. Seek wise counsel first, and don't "follow your heart" against all good sense! #genesis 29:20

One other thing that I have noticed in the Biblical polygamous relationships is that the majority of the times the additional wives were chosen/given by the first wife. (Leah was a different story as Jacob got cheated into marrying her.)
So polygamous relationships where either because the wife gave the husband another wife (or more) or because the brother died without an heir and then his brother had to marry his then sister-in-law so that she could get an heir for her deceased husband.
Now, I don't want to speak about Solomon as his life shows what happens when you follow your own plans. For that matter, all the polygamous kings broke this pattern... Hmmm
