It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud.

It is better to make yourself low than to build yourself up and wait for God to tear you down. You might ride high for a brief time, but the fall will be so much more unpleasant and deeper than the lows you could have chosen.

Consider Yeshua who voluntarily made himself low in the form of a man, and then even lower as a homeless teacher who associated with the outcasts of society. He was elevated again to the right hand of the father. Those who take the spoils and honor now already have all the reward they will ever receive.
