And Joshua turned back at that time and captured Hazor and struck its king with the sword, for Hazor formerly was the head of all those kingdoms.

The Israelites frequently moved through enemy territory so quickly during the conquest of Canaan that they had to double back and to capture cities that weren't on their immediate route. Such was the completeness of the victory God gave them.
