My personal view is that it is a reminder to myself and not a lanyard for others to hold onto to follow me. I need to know of it and what it stands for.

When it becomes a device to cover my tracks then it is too long... 😁

It is said the more pious Pharisees had Tzitzi that dragged on the ground. That is obviously a show for others to see, and probably too much. However, Yeshua did not say it was unlawful, because it isn't. The command says to make, wear, and look at them, giving no instruction as to length or method, except that they must contain a blue thread and be on the four corners of the garment. It is the wearers choice, and anyone who condemns another believer for how that is done is out of line.
Whatever works is what they should be. I have some about a foot long, so that I cannot miss seeing them, and some about 3-4 inches long for use during work where they would be a hazard if they were any longer. Both are lawful. What is not lawful is to not wear them.
