Interesting how the lamp is dated to the end of the Second Temple period. I just listened to a message this morning where Josephus and other historians explained how Jerusalem was raised to the ground with even the foundation stones being dug up.

That is why the temple mount could be ploughed over for so many years without anyone knowing it was there.

I would assume/guess that the drainage channels would have been safe from such severe destruction as a person would be crazy to be underground while destroying the structure over your head that is keeping you safe. Bearing in mind that they most likely didn't have explosives at that time...
