Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.
Proverbs 29:18 ESV

The primary role of prophets is to call the people to repentance. If no one is stirring the conscience of the people and continually redirecting their attention back to God, entropy will continually drag them down. The person who remains faithful in the absence of true prophets is especially honored.
