A man shall not take his father's wife, so that he does not uncover his father's *kanaf*.

The ESV translates kanaf as "nakedness", but I think that's way off. The word refers to the hem of his garment. It is a sexual euphemism, but it's much more than that. It's also an allusion to the authority and responsibility (aka "covering") of a man over his wife and children. His wife isn't his covering; he is hers.

It's not an accident that rules about a father's responsibility for his daughter's behavior follow the command to tie tzitziyot to the hem of his garment.
