'Arney Shipmen'

The name was gilded on a piece of otherwise plain cardboard, stapled on a tough olive green coat which lay on the slick table. A smell of coffee and lizards touched the fitfully shifting air.
Arney finished admiring the gilding, and pulled the coat on his stiff back. Into an inner pocket he secreted leather-bound notepad: its new smell made him feel he was his own.
Here we go, into the maze...
