I just finished writing something that’s been weighing on my heart ever since I watched the Netflix series Unorthodox. The show follows a young woman named Esty as she escapes her ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, searching for freedom, identity, and truth. It’s raw, emotional, and incredibly difficult to watch at times.
But what impacted me most wasn’t just the storyline—it was how closely parts of her world resembled struggles I’ve seen (and even felt) in Torah-observant communities. It stirred up deep questions in me: What happens when we guard the truth but lose love? How does the world see us—and more importantly, how does Yahweh?
This post isn’t just a review. It’s a reflection, a lament, and a longing for a kind of faith that doesn’t just follow the Torah, but carries the heart of Yahweh: mercy, justice, and love. I wrote it from a place of brokenness, and with a prayer for something better.
