- 28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. -
isaiah 10 (nasb)
- 17And the Light of Israel will become a fire and Israel’s Holy One a flame,
And it will burn and devour his thorns and his briars in a single day.
18And He will destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body,
And it will be as when a sick person wastes away.
19And the rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number
That a child could write them down. -
as you mentioned regarding daniel being quoted but the reference not being connected, so it is in this case.
because when the NT refers to 'scripture' it encompasses Torah and Tanahk, i reckon the sadducees were wrong to limit themselves to Torah only.
and i wonder how much of what is said in the NT is NOT to be found in the old 'scripture'.
back to death.
when i read, this is what i understand -
the living being i am is composed of inanimate dust (flesh) animated by the breath (soul) of the Spirit, Ruach. genesis says this.
through sin 'i' will die, ie come under the jurisdiction of death.
that portion of the breath of Ruach that is 'my soul' leaves the flesh, which returns to dust. i am no longer a composite living being.
my soul 'sleeps' under death's jurisdiction. it has not ceased to exist, which is how death is normally thought of to be.
now comes that resurrection with two paths, where my soul gets new 'flesh'.
and there's a path which now destroys both body and soul.
that destruction is what we normally understand death to be.
so no, not everybody dies, and everybody who dies (gets destroyed) actually does so on the same day...
how many get destroyed( apart from the five mentioned directly in revelation, one of which is death itself) is also not actually made clear, i hope as few as possible.
and we haven't even started talking about our spirit yet, which is totally distinct to our soul, but that's another story, linked to only one path.
