TYING TZITZITH

The importance of the commandment and its implementation…

Methods for tying tzitzith vary widely, and in this simple article we haven't the space to explain them all. So, we have chosen to teach the method we ourselves most often use, which is Nusach Sephard. We prefer this style, but we do not consider it necessarily superior to any other. All have their strong points. The reason we prefer the Sephardi method is twofold and simple: first, it more directly than any other method displays and proclaims the name of YHWH Most High. Second, the result is physically smaller and less ostentatious tzitzith than most others. Messiah Yehoshua condemned some of the religious leaders of his day for their hypocrisy and excessive pride, and used as an example their oversized tefillin and tzitzith to make his point. While we do not necessarily think such hypocrisy and pride is evident with those who choose to do differently than we, it is just as easy for us to wear the smaller tassels and avoid even the appearance of such.

Before commencing to tie your tzitzith, make sure you are in a quiet and peaceful environment, free of distractions or any elements that might defile the sacred act you're about to perform. Arrange the things you will need to do the job so that no interruption is necessary until you are finished. Then, before you begin, focus your "kavanah" - your attention, mind and heart with the intent of fulfilling the commandment of tzitzith. It is said that since this command is for the purpose of reminding the b'ney Yisrael to observe all of Torah law, that every one of those laws is contained within it. It is in this spirit and with these things in mind that you should begin the task, and then remain and continue until its completion.

As with every other sacred act, we should begin it with the blessing of YHWH and a declaration of what we are about to do in His name and for the sake of heaven. The b'rakah (blessing) for tying tzitzith is:

Baruk atah YHWH Eloheynu Melek haolam asher qidshanu b'mitzvotav vitzivanu la'asoth tzitzith.

(or)

Blessed art thou YHWH our Mighty One, King of the universe, who sanctifies us in His commandments and commands us to make tzitzith.

Then, use the instructions we have included for you on the following page.

When you have finished all four corners of your garment, pause and give thanks to YHWH for it, and for the time He has given you to perform His com-mandment. You have now reached a new level of obedience and service to our King and Sovereign of the universe - Blessed be He, and blessed be His Name.
