BIBLE STUDY LESSON 07

SERIES S --- THE SON OF YHVH

THE RICH FOOL

TRUE RICHES

From Luke 12

Before long, thousands were crowding around Yeshua, pressing so close together that they stepped on each other. On one of these occasions, He talked privately with His disciples. [Be careful of those Pharisees,] Yeshua warned them. [They are like leaven, appearing to be good when they aren’t. Be careful of secret conversation with them, for whatever you say in the dark will be heard in the light, and whatever you speak in private will be proclaimed in public. However, do not fear those who can harm the body, for that is all they can do. Instead, fear those who can destroy your soul and drag it into hell. Five sparrows are so worthless that they are sold for two small coins. But YHVH knows each one. And each hair on your head is numbered. You see, you are worth far more than sparrows. If you accept Me publicly before other men, I will accept you publicly before the angels of YHVH. But if you are ashamed of Me in public, I will be ashamed of you before the angels of YHVH. Whoever speaks against Me will be forgiven. But whoever blasphemes against Ruach HaKodesh will not be forgiven. When you are brought to trial before the rulers and authorities in their synagogues, do not worry about the things you should say, for Ruach HaKodesh will teach you at that time what you should say.] Someone in the crowd called out to Yeshua. [Tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.] [Who made Me a judge over such things?] Yeshua asked. [Be on guard against any kind of greed, for the abundance of life does not depend on the abundance of possessions.] Yeshua also told a parable, which went something like this. [A man once had rich, productive land. But he began to think only of his own ease and comfort. ‘I have so many crops, that I have no place to store them. What shall I do?’ he thought. ‘I know! I will tear clown my barns and build larger ones. When all my grain and goods are stored, I will tell my soul that I have many goods for many years to come. I will tell my soul that I will eat, drink and be merry.’ But YHVH told this foolish rich man, ‘You fool! Tonight, your soul must leave your body, and when it does, who will own all your possessions?’ This is what happens to the man who lays up treasure for himself and is poor toward YHVH.] Yeshua said then to His disciples, [You must not be anxious concerning your daily life, worrying about tomorrow’s food or clothing. Life is much more than food and clothing! Think about the ravens. They do not plant or harvest, and they have no storehouse or barn; yet YHVH feeds them each clay. Think how much more valuable you are to YHVH than the birds. Why worry? Can any of you add one clay to his life by worrying? If you can’t change little things by worrying, how do you expect to change greater things that way? Think about the lilies; do they grow by toiling and spinning cloth? No, but even Solomon in all his glory was never clothed as beautifully as one of these. If YHVH clothes the flowers in the field, which are here for only a few days, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith? So stop worrying about food and clothing. Men everywhere are toiling for their daily provisions, but your Father in heaven knows your every need. Seek first His kingdom and He will add all these other things. So do not fear, little flock, for your Father in heaven delights to give you, His Kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to those with need, for this will add to your treasure in heaven, where no thief can steal and no moth can ruin it. Wherever your treasure is, your heart will be also. Be dressed and ready, with lamps lit; like servants who wait for their master to return from a wedding are prepared to open the door instantly when he knocks. Happy are those servants who are ready and waiting when the master returns. He will personally serve them as they eat. When will he come? It may be at nine in the evening or at midnight. But his servants will find joy at his coming, whenever it is. Think about this! If the man of the house knew when the thief would break in, he would certainly be waiting for him. You must be as prepared as that man, for I will return at a most unexpected time.] [Adonai, is this parable just for us disciples, or is it for everyone?] Peter asked. [It is for any faithful and sensible steward who is placed over others, to provide for them at the proper time,] Yeshua replied. [Happy is that steward who is doing his work well when his master returns. I tell you for sure that the master will put him over all his possessions. But if that steward begins to think that his master is delayed and beats his men and women servants and spends his time drinking and eating and in getting drunk, the master will return on a most unexpected day. He will cut him off from his work, will put him with the unfaithful, and will punish him severely, for he failed to do what he knew he should. However, if he really did not know he was doing wrong, his punishment will be light. Much will be expected from those to whom much has been given, for they have much more to work with than others. I have come to bring a fire upon the earth, and I want so much for it to begin. I must go through a terrible baptism and I will be greatly distressed until it is finished. Have I come to bring peace to the world? No, not really. I bring division instead, for families will be divided because of Me—three against two, two against three, father against son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.] Yeshua said also to the crowds of people there that day, [When you see clouds arising in the west you say that a shower is coming, and you are right! When you see a south wind blowing, you say that it will be a hot day, and you are right again. Hypocrites! You can read weather signs well, so why can’t you read the signs so clear at this time? Why can’t you yourselves decide what is right? [If you are on your way to court with your opponent, try to settle with him before you get there. Otherwise, he will drag you before the judge, who will send you to prison. There you will stay until you have paid the last penny.

COMMENTARY

A ROMAN FARMYARD

Farming is the oldest known occupation in the world. Adam, the first man, tilled the ground after he was expelled from Eden. Cain, his oldest son, also tended the soil. Many generations later, Noah became a farmer after the waters of the Flood had receded from the earth. The Romans respected farming as an ancient occupation appropriate for a gentleman. It ranked with politics, law and the army as one of the few professions acceptable to a nobleman. But in New Testament times, many of the men who worked the ground were peasant farmers. While the rich Roman landowner and the peasant farmer both depended on the same primitive tools to cultivate the soil, there was an important difference in the way those tools were used. The wealthy man had servants to do the labour, while the poor man pushed his own plough. Farmers in the ancient world planted their fields in either of two ways. They could plough the ground first and then plant the seed, or they could reverse the process, and sow the seed first, then turn it under the ground with a plough. But once the crops were planted, both the rich man and the peasant were equally dependent upon the sun and the unpredictable rain to make their crops flourish.

A shaved head in Scripture often symbolizes being removed from under the power and protection of legitimate authority.

Korah was Israel's most notorious rebel in the Bible and his name means "bald".

Acts 21:24  Them take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law.

And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
Proverbs 5:7

The key to avoiding falling prey to our own delusions or those of others is to keep our eyes fixed on an objective, external source of morality. No amount of prayer or Bible study can make a person's heart infallible. Until we are resurrected at the final judgment, our hearts will remain corrupted and corruptible. The answer is to always defer to the judgment of Moses, the Prophets, Yeshua, and the Apostles as recorded in Scripture.

BIBLE STUDY LESSON 06

SERIES S --- THE SON OF YHVH

WHY OPPOSITION?

POWER FROM YHVH OR SATAN?

From Luke 11:14-54

When Yeshua came to a certain place, He drove a demon from a man who could not speak. Immediately the man’s voice returned, which caused great excitement among the people who saw it. [He drives out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons,] some bystanders said. Others demanded a sign from heaven to prove that He truly was the Moshiach. Yeshua knew what they were thinking, so this is what He said, [A kingdom which wars against itself is soon destroyed, and a home which is divided will not last. If Satan goes to war against his own forces, how can he survive? You accuse Me of driving out demons by the power of Beelzebub. By whose power do your people drive them out? Are you saying that they are also working under Satan’s power? Let them judge whether you are right or wrong. However, if I drive out demons by YHVH’s power, then His Kingdom is here in your midst. When a powerful man guards his own palace, his possessions are safe until a stronger one overpowers him, removes his arms and armour, and plunders his valuables. Whoever is not with Me is against Me; and whoever does not gather with Me, scatters. When an unclean spirit leaves a man, it travels about through deserted lands, seeking a place to rest. When it finds none, it returns to the same person it left. Finding it clean and orderly, it brings seven more spirits even more evil and occupies that man’s life until he is worse than he was before.] One of the women in the crowd shouted to Yeshua, [Blessed is the mother who bore You, and the bosom at which You nursed.] [Even more blessed are those who listen to the Word of YHVH and practice it,] Yeshua replied. By this time the crowds were growing larger. Yeshua continued to speak to them. [This wicked generation looks for a sign to prove that I am the Moshiach. But like Jonah, I will prove Whom I am by the things I do. That will be the only sign they will receive. The queen of Sheba travelled far to listen to Solomon’s wisdom. But I have brought far greater wisdom for you than Solomon’s, so the queen of Sheba will rise up in the Judgment Day to condemn you. The men of Nineveh will also rise up to condemn you, for they were willing to repent when Jonah preached, yet Someone far greater than Jonah is preaching to you, and you won’t listen. Who hides a lamp when he lights it, putting it under a grain measure or in a cellar? Instead, he puts a lighted lamp on a lampstand so that others may see the light. Your eye is like a lamp for your body. When your eye is pure, it lets true light into your heart. When your eye is evil, it causes your body to fall into darkness. Watch that the light you think you have in you is not darkness instead. A life filled with light will radiate into the face, as though a lamp is illuminating it.] After Yeshua’ sermon, a Pharisee invited him to his home for a meal. Yeshua accepted and reclined at the man’s table to eat. The Pharisee was surprised when Yeshua did not go through the usual ritual of cleansing before the meal. [You Pharisees wash cups and plates on the outside, but you fail to cleanse your inner lives, filling them with robbery and wickedness,] Yeshua said. [Don’t you foolish people know that YHVH made the inside as well as the outside? Don’t you know that giving hands and a clean heart are related? Woe to you Pharisees, for you pay tithes on everything, down to the last herb in the garden; but then have no regard for justice and YHVH’s Love. It’s good to tithe, but not at the expense of the other things. Woe to you Pharisees, for you love the front seats, the places of greatest honour, at the synagogues; and the honour people pay you as you walk through the marketplaces. Woe to you Pharisees, for you are like hidden tombs which people walk on without knowing.] One of the experts in the Law of Moses spoke up. [You insult those of us who are teachers of the Law when you say such things,] he argued. [Woe to you teachers of the Law,] Yeshua answered. [You burden people with rules they cannot keep, while you refuse to live by your own rules. Woe to you teachers of the Law, for you approve of the murders your ancestors committed, building tombs for the prophets they killed. You know what they did, yet you agree with them. YHVH said that He would send apostles and prophets, and that you would murder some and persecute the others. You are responsible for the murders of His representatives, from the death of Abel to the death of Zechariah, who was murdered between the altar and the temple. You are guilty of each of these! Woe to you teachers of the Law, for you hide the key of truth from people. You don’t want it yourselves, and you don’t want others to have it.] From that time on the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law did all they could to trap Yeshua, questioning Him and looking for something for which He could be formally charged.

COMMENTARY

INCANTATION BOWLS AND DEVIL TRAPS

When Yeshua cast out demons by Commanding them to go, it is no wonder that the crowds marvelled. Common people of the time blamed demons or devils for all the illness and misfortune that happened to them, and were constantly trying to ward them off. Many people used small bowls about six inches wide called {incantation bowls.} They were inscribed with magic words or spells -- the incantation -- and filled with water. The water had to be rain water, from a tank or cistern that had been closed, or purified by a priest. The bowls were kept covered and away from light until used. The bowls were used for many purposes. Depending on how the water was drunk or how many sips were taken, it was thought to heal wounds, stop bleeding and even cure disease. A bruised knee might be sprinkled with it, an open wound washed with it, a sick child told to drink it in one swallow. In the house, sprinkling the rooms with the water was thought to keep demons away. But the strongest magic came from leaving several bowls uncovered -- the demons would be attracted to the inscription, read it while standing on the rim of the bowl, fall into the water and drown. Sometimes a bowl was buried upside down in the foundation of the house, where it was believed to trap the demon before he could get into the rooms.

The Hebrew phrase “Mazal tov” which many translate as good luck, is not found in the Biblical Hebrew language. This is more of a Yiddish word that evolved many years after the Old Testament was written and while the original meaning was good fortune or good luck, the basic understanding was that you would be showered with blessings. The Hebrew people of our past never relied on luck, they believed that the Creator was in control of everything. When they were obedient, they were blessed and when they disobeyed the Creator they received their punishment. That is a lesson we should remember for our lives as well.
