Baptism serves two functions: wash away the uncleanness of sin and symbolize death to the old sinful life and resurrection to new life in righteousness. Confession of sins is a logical part of the process.

Why did John wear camel hair clothes and a leather belt? Hair garments were a traditional uniform for prophets (Zechariah 13:4), and Elijah was known for his leather belt (2 Kings 1:8).
