Anyone know what the significance of a cloak is? Was it simply an expensive garment? A sign of status? Elija used his cloak to split the river and left it to Elisha when he was caught up. "Sell your cloak to buy a sword". "They will say to him you have a cloak take charge of this heap of ruins."

Assuming you're talking about the outer garment that is sometimes called a "mantle", I believe it was probably an inherited sign of authority. Probably related to the standards that were used to organize the camps of Israel around households and clans in the wilderness. I can't cite any historical evidence of this idea. It's just the sense I get from reading the scriptures.
