Can I get peoples feedback on what the true meaning of this command is?

Exo 20:7 “You do not bring the Name of יהוה your Elohim to naught, for יהוה does not leave the one unpunished who brings His Name to naught.

Name here is character - do not make his character into nothing, or bring about destruction to it. In other words, don't say you are His people and act like how you want to act - act like He wants you to act. Be of His character, not your own.

I believe knowing His Name and call upon Him is acknowledgement that He is Sovereign Creator of all. Knowing YHVH is to give Him acknowledgement and keeping His Name above all names. We are all saved by His Name. YHVH has several attributes but we should not bring His Name to naught.

This is a very misunderstood commandment. Taking Yah's name in vain has nothing to do with the pronunciation of his name. In fact, Yah wrote the 10 commandments and he himself wrote his name twice within the 3rd commandment!

The 3rd commandment has to do with not doing evil in Yah's name. I'll let this video explain further:

It literally translates to “do not bear the name of Yehovah your God for meaningless.”
If you claim to follow Yehovah God, but act in ways that are contrary to him, there is no meaning in you proclaiming his name. The nations will perceive a lawless person who proclaims the name of Yehovah and soils his reputation.

If you say that you follow him, obey him.

I have been asked why I wrote YHVH. The reason is that in Hebrew you have nikkuds and not vowels.The letters only mark consonants Adding to the Yud Hey Vav Hey is the same as what many translators done. The Name of YHVH (יהוה) have been brought to null because it was removed from the Holy Scriptures. YHVH is the ineffable and unutterable Name because it is composed from four letters. Adding or subtracting to His Holy Name is not permitted. " I Am That I Am". There is by far more to elaborate on this as in Hebrew letter you will find an extraordinary Revelation.

Even a Torah scroll is disqualified if even a single letter or a Yot (Yud) is added. Qere means, “what is read,” and ketiv means, “what is written.” YHVH spoke and it was written. It's not about just the physical representation of His name- it's about misrepresentation. It's about using His name as a blanket for a particular behavior, lifestyle, action, etc. I used to get quite offended about people saying "God D***" or "Oh my god" until I learned better. Those people are saying such things in ignorance but, the truth is that saying those things has no power or actual meaning. Using Yah's name "in vain" is about misrepresenting who He is by how we live our lives and treat others.
Side note: I find it particularly ironic when atheists say the above phrases, since they'll turn around and deny His very existence. Moral of the story: say what you mean and mean what you say!

II agree with all the comments about this meaning to not misrepresent YHVH. Israel was to be a people to represent Him by adherence to Torah. When they turned their backs on Him, they took His Name in vain. What follows is an exposition on the word vain with an incredibly surprise ending.

"You shall not take the name of the YHVH your Elohim in vain, for YHVH will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
(Exo 20:7)

Do not clam to be a servant of YHWH and then do not do HIS Will which is to obey HIS Torah. Just like the scripture which refers to treating the blood of Y'SHUA as a common thing means that one should not willfully sin believing that one will be forgiven for repeating the same willful sin continually. When Scripture talks about HIS Name, it is referring to the substantive traits of who HE is. HIS Righteousness, trustworthiness, authority. it is similar to how you think of all of the traits of a person. For example, when i think of certain political puppets, i think of how they are a deceitful liar. That persons name is brought to naught by his worthless character. it doesn't matter that many people call him "brandon" now, most americians know exactly who you're talking about when you say that. i do still call YHWH by the titles "GOD" and "LORD" and many other things depending on who i am talking with but, i am still presenting the same substance of who HE is from the same Scriptures to them in a way that they can keep up with the conversation. Most "messianic Torah observers are still on the milk believing themselves to be on the highbrow steak and potato. That's why their are so many factions in this returning to the old ways movement. There are arguments over the calendar because they haven't understood historical events. there are endless arguments over the pronunciation and spelling of HIS name. There are even endless arguments over things such as whether the people in Israel are the "true" Israelite or a false people. Yes, these can be interesting topics to discuss but, why do people get so angry over them and divide themselves into denominations EXACTLY the same way that churchianity has? We should be focusing on the larger matters of obedience. Things like helping others who need a hand up teaching them to walk on their own rather than them seeking a hand-out. Learn to actually care for our animals. not only in a mechanical sense of their food, housing and healthcare but, actually care for them. Spend time with them, understand their behavior and the like. Learn to care for your land. Being good stewards of all of the things that YHWH has put in our charge. Stop trying to be a remarkable person such as many of the Biblical prophets are thought of. Those prophets weren't seeking fame, fortune or renown, they were just simply obeying YHWH. YHWH is the one who made it all work out. YHWH made them "famous" not because of their greatness and/or grate accomplishments, YHWH made them famous because they honored and obeyed HIM. That is why we are here, to serve honor and worship YHWH, our creator. So just walk through your life righteously not trying to take on every responsibility just walk obediently to YHWH where you are and that is remarkable. Leave it to HIM to choose if we should be well known to many or not.
