The preparation for Yom Kippur begins with a da of making noise. Leviticus23;24, “Tell the people of Israel: ‘On the first day of the seventh month you must have a special day of rest. There will be a holy meeting. Blow the trumpet for a special time of remembering.” This day of shouting and celebration reminds us of the exceedingly loud noise that came from Mount Sinai just before the Creator shouted down the first 10 commandments. But the next 10 days reminds us of how quickly mankind violated those instructions.
