And I will surely hide my face in that day because of all the evil that they have done, because they have turned to other gods.
Deuteronomy 31:18

The further our hearts are from God, the more he hides his face from us. This doesn't mean he no longer sees us, but rather that we can no longer see him. This is for our protection more than anything else.
