And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.

Why would Yeshua expect to find anything but leaves outside the season for figs? I believe this is related to Paul's instruction in 2 Timothy 4:2 to "be ready in season and out of season" to preach, reprove, rebuke, exhort, etc. The religious leaders of his day had failed miserably at being faithful teachers of the Word. Although it wasn't yet time to establish the Kingdom in a tangible sense, he knew that they would never produce usable fruit. They had to be removed from authority and replaced by a new leadership.
