YESHUA RISES FROM THE DEAD
From Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-11; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-18
Late Saturday afternoon, as the Shabbat was ending, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the sepulchre. That evening, as soon as the Shabbat ended, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James went with Salome to buy spices so that they might anoint Yeshua’ body the next day. Before sunrise on Sunday morning, a great earthquake came as an Angel of the Adonai descended from heaven and rolled away the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning and His clothing as white as snow. The guards were terrified and shook with fright, becoming like dead men because of Him. Not long after that Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James and some other women who had followed Yeshua came to the tomb with the spices they had bought the night before. They wanted to place the spices on Yeshua’ body to anoint it, but they asked one another, [Who will roll the stone from the tomb entrance?] As they approached the tomb, they saw that the stone was already rolled away, even though it was extremely large. They rushed into the tomb and were amazed to find a young man sitting at the right, wearing a brilliant white robe, and another nearby. The women bowed with their faces to the ground. [Why are you so surprised?] he said to the women. [You look for Yeshua of Nazareth, Who was crucified. But He has risen and has gone from this place where they laid His body. Now go tell His followers and Peter that He will return to Galilee where you will see Him, just as He promised.] The women rushed from the tomb, trembling and astonished, so frightened that they could not talk. But they remembered how Yeshua had said these things and were anxious to report this to the disciples. The women hurried to the place where the disciples were and told them what they had seen and heard. Mary Magdalene told Peter and John, [They have taken Yeshua’ body from the tomb and we don’t know where they have laid it.] Most of the disciples refused to believe the women, for the story seemed too strange. But Peter and John ran to see for themselves. John ran faster and reached the tomb first. He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but did not go in. Peter arrived at the tomb and rushed inside, and he also saw the linen wrappings lying there. The face cloth, which had been on Yeshua’ head, was rolled up in a separate place, apart from the linen wrappings. John then joined Peter inside the tomb and when he saw these things, he suddenly realized that Yeshua had truly risen from the dead, as the Scriptures had promised. After Peter and John had left, Mary Magdalene returned to the tomb, but stood outside, weeping as she looked into the tomb. She saw two angels, one at the head and the other at the foot where Yeshua’ body had been lying. [Why are you weeping?] they asked her. [Because some people have taken my Adonai, and I do not know where they have laid Him,] she answered. Mary turned around and saw Yeshua standing there, but did not recognize Him. [Why are you weeping?] He asked. [Whom do you seek?] Mary thought this must be the gardener and said to Him, [Sir, if you have taken Him away, tell me where, and I will take Him with me.] Then Yeshua spoke her name. [Mary!] When Mary heard her name, she recognized that it was Yeshua and cried out, [Teacher!] [You must not hold onto Me,] Yeshua cautioned her. [I must still return to the Father. Go to My brethren and tell them that I will ascend to My Father and your Father, to My YHVH and your YHVH.] Mary ran to tell the others that she had seen Yeshua and that He had said these things to her. Later that day Yeshua appeared to some of the other women. He greeted them and they bowed to His feet and worshiped Him. [You must not be afraid,] Yeshua told them. [Go tell My brethren to get ready to return to Galilee, for they shall see Me there.]
COMMENTARY
YESHUA’ LAST WEEK
The following provides a daily account of the week leading to Yeshua’ crucifixion.
SUNDAY
On Sunday morning Yeshua set out for Jerusalem from Bethany. Riding a young donkey, He descended the Mount of Olives and crossed the Kidron Valley. As He approached the city, He was greeted by an excited crowd. They escorted Him through the Golden Gate with shouts of praise, waving palm branches. Once inside the temple courtyard, Yeshua healed the blind and sick. But as evening approached, He left the city with His disciples and returned to Bethany for the night.
MONDAY
Yeshua and the Twelve returned to Jerusalem in the morning. When they entered the temple, they found a scene of noisy confusion. Yeshua became angry at the merchants who had turned the temple into a marketplace. The air was filled with the haggling of money changers and the cries of animals. Yeshua overturned the tables and drove out the merchants. Then He began to speak to the stunned crowd that watched in amazement. At the end of the day, He withdrew again to Bethany.
TUESDAY
On Tuesday Yeshua was again teaching in the temple when He was confronted by the angry Jewish leaders. He denounced the scribes and Pharisees but praised the poor widow who gave all that she had. Leaving the temple, Yeshua went to the Mount of Olives where He warned His disciples of the coming destruction of Jerusalem. He returned to Bethany for dinner at the house of Simon the leper. During the meal, Mary anointed Yeshua’ feet with precious ointment. He remained in Bethany with His disciples. He knew that the hour of His death was fast approaching and there were still many things that His disciples did not yet understand. He wanted to prepare them for the difficult days ahead. They would need this day of rest in preparation for the important events soon to take place. But while Yeshua spent a quiet day in Bethany, the Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem plotted His death.
WEDNESDAY
On Wednesday evening Yeshua and His disciples celebrated the Passover. They ate their last meal together in an upper room in Jerusalem. After dinner, the disciples followed Yeshua to the Garden of Gethsemane. While they slept, Yeshua spent the night in prayer. After midnight. Judas arrived with an armed guard to arrest Him. The disciples ran away in fear while the soldiers bound Yeshua. They took Him first to Annas, and then to Caiaphas to be tried by the Jewish religious leaders.
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY
Early on Thursday morning, the Jews took Yeshua to Pilate to be sentenced. But Pilate could not find Yeshua guilty of any crime. He sent Yeshua to Herod Antipas. Herod also questioned Yeshua, then returned Him to the Roman governor. Pilate offered to release Yeshua, but the Jews demanded His death. Giving in to their wish, Pilate sentenced Yeshua to be nailed to a cross. After He was dead, His followers buried His body in a cave sealed with a stone. Throughout the next day, Friday. they observed a mournful Shabbat
SATURDAY
Friday Evening started the normal Shabbat celebration, the seventh day rest, and this was the third day Yeshua spent in the grave. The women went to buy spices for Yeshua’s Body just after Shabbat ended on the Saturday night.
SUNDAY
Early Sunday morning some of the women who followed Yeshua came to the tomb to anoint His body. When they arrived, they discovered the stone rolled away and the grave empty. An angel appeared to the women. He announced that Yeshua was risen! They hurried to tell the disciples what they had seen and heard. Immediately, Peter and John ran to the tomb and found that the women’s report was true. After they had gone, Mary Magdalene was left outside the grave, mourning Yeshua’ death. While she was crying, she heard footsteps nearby. At first, she thought it was the gardener. But when she discovered it was Yeshua she was overjoyed. She hurried to tell the disciples that she had seen the risen Adonai. Soon others brought reports that Yeshua had appeared to Peter and to the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Finally, Yeshua appeared to the disciples that evening while they were eating dinner. They were frightened, but Yeshua assured them that He was truly resurrected from the dead.
