The bible's culture about names is something we have lost over time. If you have a good name, that means you have honor and character. A good family name meant the family was upright and had positive characteristics.
If someone had a bad name, that could carry through generations. There is even a scale of disrespect to respect in the Bible. From highest to lowest
A name recorded in the bible is the highest honor.
Being referenced positively without recording a name is the second highest. (Being numbered with Israel for instance)
Not being mentioned is kind of the baseline.
Purposely not being mentioned is shameful. A huge slam.
Having your name blotted out of the record to never be mentioned again is the worst.
The society would shun anybody who did something awful, even to the point of besmirching a family name.
Today, we do the opposite. The worst behavior gets the most attention. How many names do we know because the people committed horrific crimes? Even within the last week how many got famous for doing bad things?
But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
