Are Messianic Judaism and Hebrew Roots the same faith or different faiths with a lot of similarities?

So far most votes are opposed to my view, so I would love to hear that side of the point.

My view however is that Messianic Judaism is practicing Torah, beign brought up on it, and therefore following Yeshua as the Torah points to Him.

Hebrew Roots started with Yeshua (as Jesus) and started to follow Torah as He pointed us to it.

Both obey the Torah and have the testimony of Yeshua, so they are similar.

Yes, we can find differences, but we are still family. As example, my son can believe different to me on some topics, but that doesn't make him less my son and our overarching beliefs are the same.

I find the only ones that view them as different faiths are those attributing themselves to "Messianic Judaism". I believe this is due to not wanting to be associated with "Hebrew Roots" and all the baggage that has been placed on it either by outsiders, insiders that don't know better, or let's just call it for what it is: the crazies.

Even among those that attribute themselves to MJ, there are just as vast of differing opinions as there are to those of HR. You've got those that go full Ultra-Orthodox with Khabala and Talmud, to those don't go that far, but do everything mainstream Judaism does including separating in sermons and practice those of Jewish decent and "Gentiles", to those that are much like reform that look at the practices and learn from them, but don't necessarily do them. Some go as far as say Yeshua was a Pharisee and the Pharisee line of practice is the only correct way.

To 's point above, it does seem those associating with MJ seem to have either come from Judaism (without Yeshua and are now grabbing onto Him) and those associating with HR are those coming out of Christianity (without Torah and now are grabbing onto it). Sure there are exceptions, as there will always will be, but the majority of what I have seen, this is generally true.

While Messianic Judaism, Hebrew Roots and even Church of God groups that are offshoots of Herbert W. Armstrong are all Torah followers in Yeshua, there are different schools of Torah followers in Yeshua and that's fine. Some groups will have a Hebraic expression of the faith while others will have the expression of a traditional church.

Another reason why I see Messianic Judaism and Hebrew Roots as different but similar faiths is that a Hebrew Roots group cannot join a Messianic Jewish organization as far as I know. But I know that as time goes on, there will be overlap among the different groups within the Torah in Yeshua mevement.

In Messianic Judaism as a whole, they follow the man-made tradition of not pronouncing God's name while in Hebrew Roots, we freely use God's name, even if there are different variations of it.

It's an interesting question because at the root of it, you have to ask "what is faith" and what stops one and begins another? When it comes to doctrines, I don't think HR agrees with HR. It's an umbrella term. Like "Protestant" isn't a denomination, it's an umbrella term for a wide range of beliefs. There isn't often a community in HR, as the holidays differ, the dietary laws differ, and law observance differ by community. Not just in minor ways but in major ways. The same goes for Messianic Judaism (as a whole). There isn't a defined set of guidelines that make them anything in specific. What defines messianic Judaism? What defines hebrew roots? What defines Natsarim? What defines "Torah Observant Christian"? .... All these labels are one in the same. It just means you follow Sola Scriptura, reject the authority of Rabbis and Catholicism, and you follow the law as you have personally interpreted it.

This isn't an attack on anyone but a demonstration that there is no consensus within "Messianic/HR/TO"... it's essentially everyone sitting in the seat of Moses and relying on self-interpretation of the scriptures. So are they different? I know HR/TO/Messianics that are trinitarian, unitarian, follow the hillelite calendar, follow the zadok calendar, the creator calendar, the lunar calendar.... they don't mix dairy and meat, they do mix them, they don't mix egg and chicken, they light fires on shabbat, they don't light fires, they drive, they don't drive, they use electricity, they don't use it.... the list goes on. There is no consensus, and thus comparing one to the other is like asking "Are people in the United States different from people in America?".... meh.

There are a number of Messianic Jewish educational institutions, but so far, there is only one Hebrew Roots University.

Many people try to separate us by the colors of our beliefs. There is so many in the world right now. No two humans will have the same way that they walk, we’re unique and that is beautiful. It would be boring if we all had the same journeys to go through. I just call myself a whole Bible believer at this point, or like Paul admits to, a Nazarean. But they might try to make that another denomination within the Torah Movement as well lol. I just hope this isn’t the case. I just wish people would stop splitting us up and labeling us according to differences in beliefs

There might be little distinction when it comes to individuals, but not organizations. For example, First Fruits of Zion consider themselves a Messianic Jewish ministry while 119 Ministries would consider themselves a Hebrew Roots ministry.
