"Freedom of speech is the right to say whatever you like about whatever you like, whenever you like, right? Wrong.

'Freedom of speech is the right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, by any means.'

Freedom of speech and the right to freedom of expression applies to ideas of all kinds including those that may be deeply offensive. But it comes with responsibilities and we believe it can be legitimately restricted."

How would you define "free speech" in the Bible if you have to draw examples from Scripture?

A quick thought I just had is profaneness. Proverbs and many other places say not to speak with vulgar language. I had to exhaust all instances a few months ago to get my 18 year old to stop swearing constantly.

Numbers 30 talks about the differences in mens and womens vows. Also, we are not to vow loosely by taking the Name "in vain".

I don't think free speech is a Biblical concept in how we look at it in today's world. People say things and the idea that some entity can stop you from saying things, is like some entity saying you can't breathe between the hours of 4 and 5. People are going to breathe, people are going to say whatever they want.

Example, in the US, we have free speech. However, there are words that are considered taboo or shouldn't be said. There are still people that openly use these words for various reasons.

The Bible does, as points out, encourage us to guard our words and not say things idly. Speech, just like every other action we can take, can be used for good or evil. We should be choosing to use it for good.

Free speech during my childhood is a vast ocean of difference of today's view. But, the biggest "offence" I think is when you talk Bible. From schools to businesses to governments, these days you are not allowed to talk faith or politics in the work place. Only certain groups have the right to dress according to their faith but not all groups. The reason is not "to offend" other people. It is as GidgetsMom say: "A tricky subject"

I believe that saying whatever ideas you want is the same as saying whatever you want. Scripture does not believe in a true liberal society nor does it stand with freedom of speech nor expression. We are constantly told to hold our tongues for it is a two-edged sword. And wise people can control their mouths while fools set themselves up for folly. We have Torah and a deep description of what it means. You must dress appropriately and not seductively. Flirting without the intention of marriage is whoring. Hating unjustly is murder.

"Free speech", like "Freedom", refers to freedom from oppression and tyrannical control.

Fools and vile people see any kind of morality as tyranny (hence they call allowing murder of children "Pro-Choice". And, looking at this, and seeing that there are crimes and sins that can be committed by speech, others then think that "Free speech" is wrong.

According to God, government (or any man) only has the authority to enforce what God has already commanded - otherwise there is nothing that sets them above anyone else, and when they set themselves above others they are thieves, usurpers, and tyrants, likened by God to dangerous wild beasts. Freedom from such oppression is vital, and freedom of speech is foundationally vital: "Death and life are in the hand of the tongue" Pr 18.

If you do not commit a crime with your tongue against the law - not of man, but of Yahweh - then no one may justly take it on themselves to control your speech.

I do agree with what you say. The only difficult point is "not commit a crime with your tongue" as someone first needs to help the person see the fault in the speaker's message so that they can repent and change.

I assume you associate crime with sin. Is that correct?

What if they don't sin in their speech, but are incorrect in their interpretation and understanding and stand as a teacher? Should they be silenced in teaching falsehoods?

Mr hadid was allowed to continue, as were a couple others. This seems to allow for contamination. Maybe these people will go make their own site, but in the meantime, they are leading those who are less firm in thier beliefs astray.
