Preterism?
I got to learn a new term and a way of reading the Bible this week. Preterism...
This for me is as big a change in reading Scripture as when I came to the understanding of Torah. I had to throw out all my old understandings and study everything in Scripture like I have never hear of it before.
This is now where I am stuck. Am I taking a step too far or might this view be the truth? 😳
I only came upon this over the weekend while looking at a video about the Mud Flood and how it fits in with Scripture, so it's all very new.
What I understand is that there are multiple views within Preterism. Some believe Rev. 19 has already taken place and others that all of Scripture is almost done up to the New Heaven and New Earth. I can see the former view being more likely.
For me it kinds of makes sense and quite a number of "conspiracies" fits well within it. The biggest question that keeps me looking for more information on this is "how will someone living after the millenium know that they are living during that time if history has been hidden?"
Have you maybe looked into Preterism and what have you learned so that I can learn what to look out for?

My husband and I looked at it briefly a few years ago and it does give some interesting thoughts. As you said, some 'conspiracies' make a lot more sense that way.
In the end, we were leaning towards:
Some prophecies have double fulfillment so we aren't dogmatic about either way.
And we do think that the book of Revelation in particular has been slowly passing over the centuries rather than all being yet to come. But again, it's mostly something we've decided is interesting but we'll just have to leave it on the shelf and revisit as we learn more.

But I can't keep up with all the Greco/Roman terms. It seems like it's its own religion to keep having new terminology everybody has to learn.

1. They present themselves as very knowledgable of Scriptures.
2. They spiritualize anything that can't be explained physically (showing a lack of understanding of Scripture). (i.e. new heaven and new earth have already been created, we are just waiting to go there.)
3. They are VERY anti-semetic. Some of the people I have listened to, I could just imagine their sermons were much like what the speeches in Nazi Germany were like.
The last point is one I believe stems from not being able to explain why the 10 tribes of the House of Israel have never come back. They have to say they did and have been removed from the Earth already and the Jews that are here now actually aren't Jews and are part of some kind of deception.
I've had some discussions with him on the matter and what gets said a lot is "believing Jesus' words". So, I made a comic about one of the main points many Preterists use to say Jesus was even saying He was coming back pretty much immediately.

There was also a meme he shared some time ago with "proof-text" for Preterism. I took that and looked into most of the verses (it looks like I stopped at some point.) but I've included it below if interested.
I honestly feel that Preterism is a distraction for those that are waking up out of the church into something else that is putting you back to sleep.
Because with Preterism, what is the point? Judgement has already happened, the Reign has already happened. Even with partial-Preterism, most of the prophecies that are set in the future are looked at as already being passed and we are just waiting for the New Heaven and New Earth. Why the delay? Especially when all their proof Scriptures talk about no delay?
When they speak of everything going down in 70 AD, they speak of Torah as well. To them, Torah is not forever, it was just until all is accomplished. Which isn't what Scripture says. It is taking Yeshua's words and not understanding what He was saying.
Matthew 24:34 - Christ will return during the generation of first century Christians.
- In context, no this is not what He said. This dialog starts back in verse 3. The disciples asked what will be the sign of His return. Then He lists several things that will happen, starting with the abomination Daniel speaks of, THAT generation, the one that witnesses these events starting with the abomination, will not pass until all things have happened. This is showing that once these events start taking place, it happens quickly, within one generation of people.
Matthew 16:28 - Some in His audience would still be alive.
- Enter chapter 17 and some in His audience saw Him in the Father's Glory in the Transfiguration. 16:27 indicates this parameter and that messengers would be there as well. Two messengers were there: Moses and Elijah. The Father also spoke saying this was His Son, showing His Glory.
John 21:22 - Apostle John would still be alive.
- It does not say this. It even clearly states He did not say this in verse 23.
Matthew 10:23 - The disciples had no time to travel thought all of Israel before His coming.
- This indicates that towns would be persecuting the disciples. We only have a few recorded instances of a few groups doing any persecuting. Paul went from town to town and even taught in the synagogues. Never was there mention of a town persecuting them.
Matthew 26:64 - The Jewish High Council would see Christ come
- He states from now on, indicating that moment on. He wasn't at the Father's side until at least 3 days after this encounter as we can see from John 20:17. So this is not a literal phrase spoken here and should not be treated as such because they would have seen him during His trial and crucifixion.
Revelation 22:20 - Jesus promised the first century Christians that He would come quickly.
- The Greek word there has a special note in the definition: (taxý) does not mean "immediately" or necessarily "in a very short time" but rather "without any delay." Yes, His Coming will be without delay. It will be at the Father's Appointed Time.
Matthew 24:44 - Christ instructed the first Christians to be prepared for His Coming.
- Yes, and He parallels this with Noah in verse 36. There was 120 years between when God set the judgement and the Flood. It wasn't something that happened quickly right after God made the judgement, nor even in a single generation.
Revelation 3:10 - Christ encouraged the first Christians to hold on til His Coming.
- This also indicates the whole earth will be tested. Not just Israel, not just the surrounding region. The whole earth. While I can't disagree with the statement made, it does not historically support an already-happened-Second Coming as there are no historical records showing the whole earth under such testing.
2 Thessalonians 1:6-8 - The Thessalonians would find relief at the coming of Christ
- A few things here. This is Paul, not Christ or God speaking. This would be like some random pastor saying this. The whole movement of Preterism is based on the belief that pastors and preachers saying these similar things to their congregations.
- Verse 9 talks about those who did not obey being punished at His return. So, are we the ones that did not obey are being punished because this world if full of people that don't obey. If so, what's the point? We've been shut out from His presence.
1 Corinthians 1:7 - The Corinthians waited eagerly for Christ
- So have about 2,000 years of church-goers.
1 Corinthians 1:8 - Christ would keep the Corinthians strong until he came
- See note about Paul above on 2 Thessalonians 1:6-8
Hebrews 10:37 - It would only be a little while, Christ would not delay
1 Corinthians 10:11 - The end of ages had come on the first Christians
Hebrews 1:2 - The first Christians were in the last days
- Yes, they were. And we still are. 1000 years is 1 day to God.
1 John 2:18 - They were in the last hour.
James 5:9 - The Judge was already at the door
Revelation 1:1 - Everything would take place shortly
1 Peter 4:7 - The end is near
Romans 13:12 - The day was at hand
1 Corinthians 7:29 - The time was short
Zechariah 14:1-5 - This happened in 70AD.
- Where is the proof?
