The Gospel isn't just "Jesus died for your sins" although that is an important part of it. The Gospel is also "the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand" and "Repent, be baptized, accept Yeshua as King, and believe in him". This was the Gospel that Yeshua and the disciples preached.
