Did Jephthah sacrifice his daughter or just dedicate her to service at the Temple? No one knows. That's not the point of the story.
Don't make frivolous vows. If you vow something to God, it's His, whether you thought it through beforehand or not. Treat your words like a gun. Aim carefully. Know what's beyond your target. Don't point it at anyone unless you're willing to kill.
Judges 11:30-40
Ovadyah ben Yisrael
“This is the word which YHWH has commanded: When a man vows a vow to YHWH, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he does not break his word, he does according to all that comes out of his mouth.”
To break this command by failing to keep one’s word to another person, made in the image of YHWH, is as serious as breaking one’s word to YHWH Himself.
Not many men take this very seriously nowadays, though they come up with many reasons and excuses for it. There is no valid reason or excuse for breaking one’s word, and a man wwho doesn't keep his promises is no man at all. Consider Yepthah…
