John defined sin as transgression of the law. Not just any law, but the Law of God as given through Moses, aka Torah. Long after Jesus' death and resurrection, John (and all the other Apostles) were still teaching people to keep God's commandments, just like Jesus did. That's why I do too.

This is such a good point to raise when people ask about why your follow Torah. How can you measures if something is sin if you don't have a ruler to measure against???

This was my opening subject when two Jehovah's Witnesses came knocking and they couldn't argue against following the law. We are now meeting fortnightly to discuss other subjects as well. 😎
