even more pertinently, because we are told by our Messiah that to say raca is not so good, but to say fool to anybody but yourself is really not good.
proverbs distinguishes between the scoffer, the wicked, and the fool.
the scoffer scoffs at God, specifically the knowledge of God. in fact, he scoffs at the very fact that God exists, thinking it not real.
the wicked is wicked precisely because he rejects the counsel of God, choosing to rebel against God's commands. consciously. and he's wicked because he DOES know God exists. conscious thereof.
and the fool ignores the wisdom to be gained by following the counsel of God.
so when one does know God exists, and one follows the commands of God, to then not exercise, or judge by, the wisdom that that should produce, well, that is what we can call folly.
so why is saying fool so bad?
who does one call a fool?
the scoffer? no, because his problem is he doesn't believe God exists at all. his problem is he scoffs.
the wicked? no, because his problem is he doesn't follow the counsel of God. his problem is he's wicked.
the fool? yes, but this is where the problem lies in calling someone a fool. who knows God exists AND follows (or claims to) His counsel? the israelite, that's who.
so condemning someone to be a fool, well, one does that only to a fellow israelite, and you had BETTER be sure of your accusation before making it, or the incorrect accusation will turn against you and you will suffer the fate you ordained by placing that person in that box.
you can't say it because it is not you who can see into the heart of that other person. that is the territory of God, and God alone.
this brings jay's quote even harsher into focus.
understanding the above, read like this
when an israelite's folly brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against YHWY.
