so what is the trinity? - man-made idea. created to refute other man-made ideas. when Arius showed it wrong through the simple combining of the Word (the Son is the only-begotten of the Father) and logic, therefore there must have been a time when the Son was not, the reaction was to declare common sense heresy and the trinity indisputable.
i saw only one 'difficult' passage in isaiah, that seems to equate the Father and the son, in ch 8:13-14
13The LORD of Hosts is the One
you shall regard as holy.
Only He should be feared;
only He should be dreaded.
14And He will be a sanctuary—
but to both houses of Israel
a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense,
to the dwellers of Jerusalem
a trap and a snare.
so that would make it seem the Father is the stumbling stone.
but then, isa 28:16 says
So this is what the Lord GOD says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
the one who believes will never be shaken.
and to tie it up, psalm 118:22-23
22The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
23This is from the LORD,
and it is marvelous in our eyes.
the quotes in the NT actually link these verses together anyway, showing those authors fully understood this.
