Exhorting (parakaleo) in Romans 12:8 usually refers to some kind of teaching or homiletic speech with an intent to motivate the hearers to take some action. In other words, preaching. It could also be translated as imploring, beseeching, etc. Here are a few examples:
- In Matthew 8, Legion exhorted Yeshua to send them into the herd of swine, and then the people of the nearby village exhorted him to leave their region.
- In Acts 21:12, the believers at Caesarea exhorted Paul not to go to Jerusalem after Agabus warned him that the religious leaders there would arrest him and hand him over to the Roman authorities.
- In Jude 1:3, Jude exhorts his readers to contend for the faith.
