Most would read this and believe it, but a critical read revels the article is filled with nothing but guesswork and speculation.

As you say, it is all guess work. They use the rock layers in the soil to date the plant matter and the plant matter to date the rock layer. A circular reference with set assumptions about each input so that they have a stake in the ground to work with.
I'm not against an older dating of earth than 6,000 years as not even the LXX agrees with that and already adds 1,400 years to the age of the earth. The assumptions in how things are dates is where I have some concerns in.
