Torah never promised eternal life for obedience. It promised only life. Torah didn’t threaten eternal damnation for disobedience. It only promised damnation. Blessings for obedience and cursing for disobedience.
Moses says “ I set before you this day: life and blessing, and death and cursing; therefore, choose life that you and your children may live.”
Not eternal life and not everlasting death.
Just life on earth or death and departing from it.
Essentially Moses set two glasses filled with liquid and told us drink one. The first is refreshing ice water and the second is only poison. If you drink the water you will live. If you drink the poison you will die. And then he tells us not to drink the poison…
And what did we do? We drank the poison because the water doesn’t give us everlasting life.
We need water to stay alive and drinking water won’t kill us if it isn’t in extreme amounts or poisoned. And refusing to drink poison will keep us alive while drinking it will kill us likely instantly.
Torah offers life like fresh water. It is success and health and prosperity and blessing and all that as it promised. Not for ever and ever but for this life we live now. And it also promises that breaking its instructions brings death like poison, sometimes fast and sometimes slow but death all the same.
You don’t need Yeshua to do for you something Torah used to do. You don’t need Him to be your literal food and water and avoidance of poison. You only need Him to be all that for more than this life.
“If you want to enter life,” He says,” keep the commandments.” Not everlasting life for keeping temporal commands but life here and now, unpoisoned and unpolluted. He went on to say, “Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for My sake will keep it to eternal life.”
In other words, He gave us life for the time being, and Torah to define life, help us keep it and keep from being poisoned by the ways of the world, and then He offered us the ability to keep that life for all eternity.
We don’t get to keep our poisoned pursuits. We only get to keep His Way for ever and ever …if we get anything.
If you think you have eternal life in Messiah but you don’t accept the life He offers here and now in Torah in this world, you need to check the label on the glass you’re drinking from.
