I have loved you, saith YHWH. Yet ye say: 'Wherein hast Thou loved us?' Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith YHWH; yet I loved Jacob; But Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and gave his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness.
Malachi 1:2-3

God loved Esau but hated his pride and worldliness. God turns away from the proud, but favors the humble. This is what it means when God said, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."
