Inside the Thunder

The Reality of Wisdom, Power and Potential

They say "knowledge is power," but knowledge itself is only potential power not power itself. Knowledge is not ability but possibility. One can possess all the knowledge in the world and yet be no more than a librarian. All the information without the will to action amounts to as much as anyone ignorant of any thought at all. The same things can be created by the imbecile as well as by an omnipotent, if the all-knowing-one lacks the desire or the drive to do something with his acquired knowledge.

It is rather "will" that is power, knowledge coupled with purpose, which combine to make untamed, unformed might, capable of anything whether good or ill, beautiful or terrible.

And yet power itself is not what should be desired of us, for it, lacks in its nature a skilled and steady hand. Power is knowledge applied, but in order to be more than chaos in action, power needs direction. It needs control, a conduit to harness the lightning and help it produce light and heat and energy for running machines and making modern life possible.
Wind and water and fire are all a possibility to power but they demand a mind to make it all possible. Knowledge is potential. Knowledge with desire is power, but knowledge with desire and direction is wisdom, and wisdom is the only worthy endeavor. Wisdom is information and zeal put together to be of good use. In balance, the proper application of education and intention, the acting out of reason and the projection of good common sense onto any given situation or any given circumstance is the execution of wisdom. And he who wisely wields such power, will see clearly in a world out of focus and in a time without vision; Such a man possesses power worth having because it can be harnessed rather than merely held or beheld. This is also likely to be the man who has the knowledge of the Most High. The Bible tells us that fear of YHWH is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of Him is discretion. This is all the knowing that leads to real power, the knowing of the Holy One and brought together with a desire to make use of this knowledge, that is the fear leading to wisdom.

Knowledge of the Almighty is the greatest power, like nothing else imaginable. Having the knowledge and zeal for the Maker of heaven and earth is like riding the lightning inside the thunder, but truly fearing the Most High is not that wild thrill ride into the heart of the hurricane. It is as scripture says that the fear of YHWH leads to life, and that living is done in the eye of the storm. The fear of the Most High is in the wise one whose days are spent in the midst of the maelstrom. We can meet the storm-Maker and know that we will be okay within His presence ( not because He is safe, but because he is good ) then we will understand the difference between knowledge and wisdom; the difference between power that is really potential and power that can be put to good use is the difference in our personal place in relation to it. If we have to be inside the storm, being in the eye is a good place to be and the best.
