SERIES E --- YHVH’S LAWS --- LESSON 17
THE LEVITE REBELLION
KORAH’S REBELLION
From Numbers 16:1-35
One day a rebellion was organized against Moses. Its leader was a Levite named Korah, who had descended from Levi through Izhar and Kohath. He conspired with three descendants of Reuben, Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab and On the son of Peleth, along with two hundred and fifty of the most popular leaders of the people. These rebellious people came to see Moses and Aaron to tell them what was happening. You have placed yourself too far above us, the leaders said. All of us are dedicated, holy men of YHVH, for He is with us all. So why do you elevate yourselves above us? When Moses heard this, he fell with his face to the ground. Then he spoke to Korah and those who had come with him. Tomorrow morning Adonai will show you Who is His and Who is holy and whom He has chosen to talk with Him. Listen to me, Korah and all who are with you; bring censers tomorrow and place hot coals in them with incense. Then we will learn whom Adonai has chosen. You are the ones who are placing yourselves too high, you sons of Levi. Moses also said to Korah, wasn’t it enough for you that Adonai separated you from the rest of the people and permitted you to serve Him in the tabernacle? Wasn’t it enough to be near Him and to stand before the people to minister to them? Wasn’t it enough that He chose only you Levites to do this special work? Apparently not, for you are now trying to become priests also. You people have come here against Adonai. And why are you revolting against Aaron? What has he done to you? Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, to come to him; but they refused. Wasn’t it enough for you to take us out of a land flowing with milk and honey to bring us here to the wilderness to die? They mocked. Wasn’t it enough for you to set yourself up as our only leader? You have not brought us to the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and honey and you have not given us as much as one field or vineyard for our inheritance. Do you think you can keep on deceiving all these men? No, we will not come to see you. Moses grew very angry when he heard this. Adonai, do not honour their offering, he prayed. I have not taken as much as a donkey from any of them nor have I ever hurt one of them. Moses spoke again to Korah, come here tomorrow with your friends and Aaron will stand here with you before Adonai. Each of you must bring a censer and put incense in it. Altogether there will be two hundred and fifty censers, as well as the one Aaron brings. The men did as Moses said and brought their censers and put fire and incense in them and stood at the entrance to the tabernacle with Moses and Aaron. Korah had stirred up the entire congregation about this, so all the people came to see what would happen. As soon as the people had arrived, the glory of Adonai appeared to them. Adonai spoke to Moses and Aaron and said, get away from all these people and I will destroy them instantly. But Moses and Aaron fell with their faces to the ground before Adonai. O YHVH, the YHVH of all people, why punish all the people for the sins of one man? Then tell the people to get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram, Adonai answered. Moses rushed to the tents of Dathan and Abiram the two hundred and fifty leaders close behind him. Stay away from the tents of these wicked men! Moses warned people. Touch nothing that belongs to them or you will swept away with their sins. The people hurried away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram, but Dathan and Abiram came to the entrance their tents and stood there with their wives and children. What you are about to see should convince you that Adonai has chosen me to do all that I have done, Moses said to the people. You will know that I have not done these things by my own choosing. If these men die a natural death or by one of the usual ways that men die, then Adonai has not sent me. But if Adonai causes the ground to open up and swallow them and all their possessions, taking them down alive to Sheol, then you will know for certain that these men have turned away from Adonai. As soon as Moses finished speaking, the ground opened up beneath Korah and those who had conspired with him, swallowing them and their families, as well as their tents and all their possessions. They fell down alive to Sheol and the earth tumbled over them and they vanished. The people of Israel who were standing nearby fled when they heard the screams of those people, saying, the earth may swallow us, too! Then a fire came forth from Adonai and consumed the two hundred and fifty leaders of Israel who had offered the incense.”
COMMENTS
LIFE THEY LEFT BEHIND: EGYPTIAN METAL WORKING
There is a period of history known as the Bronze Age and another known as the Iron Age. These periods are so named because of the widespread use of metals that were developed during those periods. Add gold and silver to this list and you will have the four most commonly used metals of the ancient world. There were others of course. In the early history of Egypt, its people discovered that the naturally soft lumps of copper became hard when hammered. Later they found that copper could be melted over a flame, especially by making the fire hotter with blowpipes. This {swimming metal,} as they called it, could be poured into stone moulds and cast into a number of wonderful things; figurines, jewellery, tools, weapons, pans and vases. For larger items, it was necessary to keep enormous amounts of copper melted until it could be poured. This made it necessary to keep the fire hotter than usual and thus required more powerful bellows. The Egyptians developed a clever bellows operated by human foot power. It was made of two large leather bags. The man who operated the bellows stood with one foot on each of the leather bags. As he pushed down on one bag, forcing air from it through the blowpipe, he lifted the other bag with a drawstring held in his hand. Then while he stepped down on the other bag, he lifted the first with a drawstring. Back and forth the workman went between the two bags, keeping a steady stream of air going to the fire. Metalworking developed into other areas, such as copper alloys, which combined copper with other metals. The alloy was usually stronger than any one metal. Copper and tin combined to make bronze, which was used by the Israelites in making items for the tabernacle and the temple. Forging was also developed, a process of shaping hot soft metal without melting it. The Hittites knew the secret before anyone else and then the Philistines used it to make wrought iron and finally the Israelites learned how. Steel is not a modern development, for Egyptian metal workers knew how to make it centuries ago.

FINDING MESSIAH IN TORAH BOOK EXCERPT
Genesis 11:1-32
Man built a tower whose top was to be in the heavens. They did not like God’s commandment to spread out from each other and fill the earth.
And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.” Gen 9:1
But, wanting to bypass it, they tried to establish their own way to go up to God. Instead, YHVH God came down to them.
And YHVH came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men had built. Gen 11:5
We cannot go up to Him, so He comes down to us. Isn’t He wonderful? All His judgments are just!
