God told Moses to collect a range of items for use in building the Mishkan: gold, silver, bronze, blue, purple, scarlet, linen, goat's hair, tanned skins, leather, acacia wood, oil, spices, onyx, precious stones.
What God didn't want: resentful penny-pinchers. He wanted free-will offerings for building his house, not taxes or some other form of extortion. He wants us to choose to serve him and to become the very building blocks of his house.
