The Battle Belongs to YHWH. Who the enemy is is His choice. What cause we fight for is His call. Where the battlefield will be is decided by Him, and when and how we war against them there… but it is indeed we who much go to war.
“The Battle Belongs to the Lord” is an oft quoted maxim among those who don’t know the Maker’s Name, but it is said as a means of surrender to Divine action on our behalf rather than what the Scripture says in its fullness.
Yes in Exodus 14 it is said that YHWH fights for Israel and we only need be still…yet this is addressing the crossing of the sea on dry ground and the waters crashing back again on the enemy.
But when we read that the Battle Belongs to YHWH, we see David slaying a giant and then leading the Israelites to defeat the Philistines in battle.
And why were they fighting the Philistines so long after the promise land was supposed to be theirs? Because they were supposed to enter the land and make war on the inhabitants to destroy or drive them out…yet they did not do this fully.
War belongs to YHWH as does peace, and He knows when one will be necessary and the other a nuisance.
There are times in life when we will indeed have to sit still and wait for our Father Above to work wonders for us here below, wonders which we ourselves can not possibly perform, and in that day we say “The Battle Belongs to YHWH.”
But most often that will not be the case. Infact almost never will one who serves YHWH have to sit and watch and wait for Him to do the dirty work for them. Most often we will be thrust in the midst of battle, called to dive into danger, and to do great deeds ourselves.
Saying “The Battle Belongs to YHWH” should most often mean to us when we say it that if we will live through the fighting it is a gift from Him. It means that if we win it was because the outcome was in His Hands. And if we did our best then that is all that could be asked of us and He will do the rest
