BIBLE STUDY LESSON 10
SERIES R --- THE GOOD SHEPHERD
A NEW WORK
WHAT YESHUA TAUGHT THE TWELVE
From Matthew 9:35-11:1
About that time, Yeshua went throughout Galilee, visiting all the towns and villages. He taught in the synagogues, telling the Good News of the Kingdom and healing people from all kinds of disease and sickness. Wherever He went, He was filled with compassion for the crowds, for they were like sheep that had no shepherd, weak and helpless with nowhere to turn. [There is a great harvest of people,] Yeshua told His disciples. [But the workers are few. Pray to Adonai of the harvest that He will send more workers to gather His harvest.] When Yeshua had called His twelve disciples together, He gave them the power to drive out evil spirits and to heal all kinds of disease and sickness. The names of the twelve were Simon Peter and his brother Andrew, James and his brother John, both sons of Zebedee, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the patriot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Yeshua. These were the twelve whom Yeshua sent forth, giving them the following orders:
[Do not go to the Gentiles or Samaritans but only to the lost sheep of Israel. Go and preach that the Kingdom of heaven is near. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, and drive out demons. Give without payment as you have received without paying. Carry no gold or silver or money, take no bag of provisions with you, not even a walking stick, for as My worker, you should be given all you need. When you enter a city or village, find some worthy man and stay with him until you leave. As you enter his house, put your blessing upon it. If you are welcomed, let your blessing remain. If you are rejected, let your blessing return to you. Wherever some do not welcome you or hear what you have to tell them, as you leave that place, shake the dust from your feet. You must know for certain that on the Judgment Day the people of Sodom and Gomorrah will be shown more mercy than the people of that place. I send you forth as sheep among wolves. Be as wise as serpents, but as harmless as doves. Be careful! For there are some who will arrest you and try you in court and whip you in the synagogues. Before governors and kings, you will be brought to trial because of Me. But there you may tell the Good News about Me, a witness to all who hear. You must not worry about the words you should speak, for at the time of your trial, the right words will be given to you. For you will not speak these words as your own, but as a gift from the Spirit of your Father, Who will speak through you. Some men will betray their own brothers to the death. Some fathers will betray their own children, too. And children will turn against their parents and send them to their death. People will hate you because you are Mine. But those who endure to the end will be saved. When they mistreat you in one town, go to another. I will come to be with you before you visit all the towns. A pupil is not greater than his teacher. A servant is not greater than his master. If men have called the head of the family ‘Satan,’ what will they call the rest of the family? But you must not be afraid. All that is hidden will be revealed, and all secrets will become known. What I tell you in the darkness of night, you must tell others in the bright light of day. What I whisper now you must proclaim then. Do not fear those who can kill only your body but cannot harm your soul. But fear YHVH, Who has the power over both body and soul. Is the cost of sparrows two for a penny? But not one of them falls to the ground without the consent of your Father. As for you, each hair is counted. So do not fear for you are worth much more than many sparrows. Whoever claims Me as his Friend before other people, I will claim as My friend before My Father in heaven. Whoever denies to others that I am his, I will deny to My Father that he is Mine. I did not come to bring peace to the world. I bring not peace, But a sword. With My coming, sons will turn against fathers, daughters against mothers, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law, and thus one’s worst enemies may come from his own family. Whoever loves father or mother more than Me Is not worthy of Me. Whoever loves son or daughter more than Me Is not worthy of Me. Whoever does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. Whoever clutches his life to himself will lose it, but whoever gives up his life for Me will save it. Whoever welcomes you, welcomes Me, and whoever welcomes Me, welcomes the One Who sent Me. Whoever welcomes a messenger of YHVH because he is YHVH’s messenger, will share in the rewards for YHVH’s messengers. And whoever welcomes a righteous man because he is righteous, will share in the rewards for righteous men. Whoever gives the least of My helpers a cup of cold water, because he is My helper, will share in the rewards reserved for My helpers.]
When Yeshua had given these instructions to His twelve disciples, He went to other towns to teach and to preach.
COMMENTARY
THE TWELVE DISCIPLES
Yeshua had many followers during His lifetime, but there were twelve men who were especially close to Him. He chose each of them by name to become a member of the circle of His closest friends. They became known as {the Twelve Disciples} because they believed in Yeshua and told others about Him. They left their homes and jobs to travel everywhere with Him. After Yeshua’ death, these twelve men were called {apostles.} They became the leaders of the early believers because they had been eyewitnesses to everything that Yeshua said and did. Some of the apostles wrote down what they remembered about Yeshua in the books that became part of the New Testament. Sometimes Paul is called {the thirteenth apostle} even though he did not know Yeshua during His life on earth. Paul became a follower of Moshiach after he saw Adonai in a vision on the road to Damascus. Paul and the twelve apostles carried on the work that Moshiach began. They risked their lives to spread the Good News.
In the beginning was the word. That got my attention real quick. ?

The Menorah was made from a single piece of hammered gold. What a laborious, painstaking process that must have been!
A righteous and spirit-filled life is achieved only through trials, like the beaten gold of the Menorah. Purity is painful.
