The first week of Creation prepared for the work of the rest of eternity. No plants grew, although God had created them. The work of the sky was to create rain. The work of the ground was to create life. The work of the plants was to grow from their seeds. All of this was prepared in advance like a Rube Goldberg machine.

This concept is repeated in Matthew 25:46, John 5:29 and we read the final application of it in Revelation 20.
