BIBLE STUDY LESSON 17

SERIES V --- JOURNEYS FOR YESHUA

ON TRIAL

FELIX JUDGES PAUL

From Acts 24

Five days after Paul arrived at Caesarea the high priest, Ananias, came with some elders and an eloquent lawyer named Tertullus to accuse him. After Paul was summoned, Tertullus began his speech to Governor Felix. [We appreciate the peace and good changes you have brought to our nation. But since I do not wish to bore you, I would ask that you listen briefly to what we have to say. This man is stirring up trouble among the Jews throughout the world, and is also one of the leaders of the sect known as the Nazarenes. [He tried to defile our temple, so we seized him and tried to punish him according to our Law, but the commander Lysias took him away by force and sent him to you. If you examine Paul closely, you will find that our charges are true.] The others who had come with Tertullus agreed that his charges were true. Then Felix motioned for Paul to defend himself. [I am pleased that my defence is before you, for you have judged matters concerning the Jewish people for several years,] Paul began. [I was in the temple only twelve days ago to worship. Contrary to what they say, I did not start a riot or even lead a discussion there or out in the city. They simply cannot prove the charges they are making. I do confess, though, that I worship YHVH according to the Way, which they call a sect, believing what is written in the Law and the prophets. I have hope in YHVH as these men do, believing in a resurrection for the just and the unjust. I also try to live so that my conscience is clear, both in my relationships with YHVH and with man. [After being away for several years, I returned with some money contributed to the Jews of my nation and went to the temple to make an offering. There I was, peacefully completing my purification ceremony when they found me. There were no mobs or riots until those Jews from Asia started one. By the way, if they have a complaint against me, they should be here to present it! Also, I would like these men here to say exactly what wrong the council found in me, unless they did not like my remark that I was before them because of my belief in the resurrection.] Governor Felix knew about the teachings of the Way, so he delayed the trial by saying, [I will decide when the commander, Lysias, comes.] Then he ordered Paul to be kept under guard, but with more freedom than before. He also ordered that Paul’s friends should be permitted to help him. Several days later Felix and his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess, brought Paul before them to tell about his faith in Yeshua Moshiach. But when Paul talked about righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened. [That’s enough for now,] he told Paul. [Go away, and when it is a more convenient time, I will call for you again.] Felix actually did call for Paul a number of times to talk with him, for he hoped that Paul would bribe him. This went on for about two years, until Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. Since Felix wanted to gain favour with the Jews, he left Paul in prison.

COMMENTARY

THE FACES OF ROME: MEN

When a youth laid aside the red-bordered toga of boyhood at sixteen and put on the white toga of a man, he became an adult in the Roman world. At that age, the young man was ready to take up his career. His occupation depended on the social position of his family. The son of a middle-class citizen might become a merchant, while a senator’s son looked forward to a position in government. A man’s social class also determined whom he would marry. His parents chose a wife for him from a family whose status was equal to their own. Even the clothes that he wore displayed a man’s rank. The wider the purple band around the hem of his toga, the more important he was in Roman society.

The world is quickly turning against 'Yahuah and those of us who love Him. Even in america where freedom of speech is supposed to be a guaranteed right, the masses for satan are the only ones allowed to speak freely. If you so much as say "praise Yah" for the rain, you are at the very least reprimanded. My outrahe is not righteous though. I am being selfish and angry that i cant express my love for Yah more than i am angry the world doesnt love Yah. It makes me no better than the oppressors. I am in disagreemet with myself. On one hand, i want the new heaven and earth to be ushered in so Yah is praosed and worshipped continually. On the other hand, i know the pain and torture that must proceed it, amd i dread it. Please Yah, save us from the evil ones! But if i must suffer for you, as Yeshua did for me, i am willing. Please give us strength and courage to finish the race! Come, Yeshua, with your legions of angels and free this world!

What you said is so true. A minority is taking control by manipulating the masses through fear that they will be called "unjust" towards the minority.

May our flight not be on Shabbat or in the winter; as we have been warned that we will be hated as they first hates Yeshua.

My daily prayer is that Father's children will stay strong with our feet planted on His Word.

I know that I will be targetted for running TTN and being outspoken, but I can only pray that Father's Spirit will keep me strong for what is coming and so should we all stand as witnesses against the world.

Partial emancipation means you only have privileges if you comply and the evidence of the taking away of those privileges for non-compliance is blatant. That's why we can't trust in the laws of humanity and must only rely on Yahuah's Torah by the blood of Yahshua! HalleluYah!

Believers are warned about deception and false teachers throughout the Bible with good reason. The enemy is consistently attempting to disrupt and destroy and will use any avenue to achieve the annihilation of mankind. Arguably one of the greatest deceptions is the inclusion of idol worship and the replacement of the Creator among believers. Psalm 44:20—21, “If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.” When we seek His face and listen for His voice, He offers us grace and understanding even as the enemy tries to deceive us.

Yes Paul was a Pharisee and to think he had some elevated authority to expunge one word from the voice of God is preposterous. Paul must align with God... not the other way around.

"Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law" Acts 21

It is stunning to me when again and again I see people who claim to honour and study Scripture, yet swallow hook-line-and-sinker the atheist fairytale that Christianity is a new religion which replaced Judaism.

"Judaism" as it is understood today is a thing of today. Christianity received its name after Christ's incarnation, but it is the same religion practiced by Noah - which in Scripture is simply referred to as "righteousness", and fearing God.

Being a Jew, in the sense of being circumcised, never was nor can be a religion (or a bloodline, I might add): it is a covenant. It was never replaced, those who entered it and who do enter it are (obviously) bound by their word to keep that covenant. The only change is that now none should enter into this covenant (for various reasons). Obviously new people come into it by it being passed on: if you do not circumcise your child, you have broken the covenant. But no one should now take circumcision onto himself.

"Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised." 1Cor 7

There was never a moral requirement to become circumcised: it was commanded to Abraham and his household as a sign of God's covenant to specifically bless Abraham; any others who entered into that covenant did so completely voluntarily.

It was a heresy taught later, in the Pharisees day, that unless you were circumcised you were not one of the righteous and could not enter heaven. It is astonishing how many today teach that this heresy was only a heresy after Christ, despite having the Scriptures in front of them, which say not a word of how Christ changed it to not be so, but only of how it never was and never can be so: if someone doesn't understand how such a heresy can never be true, it is hard to say they understand salvation at all.

Christ saves the righteous, the innocent (such as little children, the prime example he gave), not the circumcised, or the baptised.

"So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham." Gal 3

"Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek Yahweh:
look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.
Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you" Is 51

Thought for Today: Sunday July 23:

We learn to believe by believing. We learn to love by loving. The practice of acting on a certain thing, even or especially, when felling is absent, embodies the entire “how” of growth.

CAESAREA

PAUL IS TAKEN TO CAESAREA

From Acts 23:12-35

The day after Paul was taken prisoner, more than forty Jewish men vowed that they would not eat or drink until they had killed him. They shared their plot with the chief priests and elders. [You and the council have the commander bring Paul here again, pretending to examine him further. We will hide along the way and kill him there.] The secret leaked out to Paul’s nephew, his sister’s son. He rushed to the fortress and told Paul, who called for a centurion. [Take this young man to the commander,] Paul told the centurion. [He has an important message for him.] When the centurion reported to the commander, he gave him this message. [The prisoner Paul asked that I bring this young man to you with an important message.] The commander led the boy by the hand to a private place. [Now, what message do you have?] he asked. The boy told the commander about the plot. [They will ask you to bring Paul to the council tomorrow,] he reported. [They will pretend that they want to examine him some more, but forty of them have vowed not to eat or drink until they have killed him, so they will hide and wait for him.] [Tell no one what you have said to me,] the commander urged as he sent the boy away. Then he summoned two centurions and gave them orders. [By nine tonight I want two hundred soldiers, ready to march; as well as seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen,] he commanded. [Provide animals for Paul to ride on, and escort him safely to Governor Felix in Caesarea.] The commander sent this letter along: [Claudius Lysias to His Excellency, Governor Felix, Greetings! The Jews were trying to kill this man when I rescued him, for he is a Roman citizen. I took him to their council, hoping to learn why they were hurting him, but found that it was nothing but some disagreements concerning their religious Laws, certainly no charge worth execution or imprisonment. I then learned of a plot to murder the man, so I am sending him to you, and am informing his accusers to bring their charges to you.] The soldiers obeyed and took Paul as far as Antipatris that night. The next day they returned to the fortress while the horsemen continued with Paul to Caesarea, where they delivered him to the governor, along with the letter. When the governor read the letter, he asked Paul which province he came from, and Paul told him Cilicia. [I will hear from you completely as soon as your accusers arrive,] the governor responded. Then he ordered Paul kept in the prison in Herod’s palace.

COMMENTARY

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF PAUL: CAESAREA

Strato’s Tower was once a Phoenician town on the northern coast of Palestine. When Herod the Great chose it as the site of his new harbour, he renamed it {Caesarea} in honour of his friend and patron, Caesar Augustus. Herod built an entirely new city over the old settlement. He encircled it with a wall and equipped it with sewers and road systems. Fresh water was supplied by an aqueduct that connected the city with nearby springs. When it was complete, Caesarea had many public buildings. In addition to an amphitheatre and a hippodrome, Herod built an imposing temple dedicated to Augustus. Herod’s most important contribution to Caesarea was a completely man-made harbour. Two long sea walls formed a large semicircle broken by a large gate on the northern side. Tremendous stone blocks up to fifty feet long were used to build the underwater walls. The project took twelve years to complete, and the finished harbour was the largest on the coast of Palestine. Caesarea soon became the trade centre of Palestine. Because of its important connections with Rome and Jerusalem, the Romans made it their capital city in Palestine. Three thousand Roman troops were stationed there to help keep the rebellious Jewish nation under control. Roman power was much stronger in Caesarea than in Jerusalem. When Paul’s nephew discovered the plot against his uncle’s life in Jerusalem, the apostle had to be smuggled out by night. In Caesarea the Roman guards were better able to protect Paul against the angry Jewish leaders who swore to kill him.
