The Sinai covenant is different than Abraham's covenant. Did the newer Sinai covenant cancel the older Abrahamic covenant? Of course not! Although a new covenant might cover the same territory and thereby make the older one obsolete, it can never cancel the prior one. As Paul wrote, "Even with a man-made covenant, no one changes or cancels it once it is ratified."

John defined sin as transgression of the law. Not just any law, but the Law of God as given through Moses, aka Torah. Long after Jesus' death and resurrection, John (and all the other Apostles) were still teaching people to keep God's commandments, just like Jesus did. That's why I do too.
